Goodwill has been operating thrift stores for more than a century, but never quite in this environment.Goodwill Industries of DallasTim Heis, 43, joined Goodwill as CEO just before the pandemic, and he came from Neiman Marcus, where he was vice president of strategy.
“It was very clever of the Goodwill board to hire someone like Tim with a strategy and retail background,” said Karen Katz, the former CEO of Neiman Marcus who’s“He’s going to double down on the opportunities in the re-commerce business for Goodwill.” Heis says he has a plan to double the store count from 16 in September 2019 when he joined Goodwill to 32 to 40 stores by 2030.There are two new Goodwill stores so far: one at Forest and Marsh lanes in North Dallas opened this month and one on North Central Expressway in Plano near Collin Creek opened last summer. An outlet store opened at 3020 N. Westmoreland Road in 2020 that sells goods for $1 a pound. The local Goodwill can grow its retail sales from $23.
As it opens more stores, Goodwill will expand awareness and be more convenient for more people in Collin, Dallas and Denton counties, which is where Heis is focusing the expansion.Heis has already made some significant changes as he prepares for that growth.
Let’s hope they update the signage within the stores as to the cost of items. Frustrating that clothing is not tagged & no rack signage.
