Building better batteries: Sila Nanotechnologies CEO Gene Berdichevsky was employee No. 7 at Tesla Inc. and helped to develop the battery used in the Roadster.

"We let our end customers decide who they want to have make batteries that use our materials," co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Gleb Yushin told the Business Journal.

Sila's anodes are already being used in batteries that power a small fitness tracker made by Boston-based Whoop Inc. Whoop says that using Sila's anodes helped shrink the size of its trackers by a third. Sila is also partnering with Mercedes-Benz Group, which invested in the company in 2019. Mercedes plans to use Sila's anodes in auto batteries that it will begin testing in 2025. The anode material is planned to be produced at a new Sila factory in Moses Lake, Washington, beginning in 2024.

CEO and co-founder Gene Berdichevsky has a long history in EV battery development. He was employee No. 7 at Tesla Inc. in 2004, helping develop the battery used in its first car, the Roadster.Electrifying Silicon Valley: Want to know how Google made its new Bay View campus an all-electric showcase?
