The business community is speaking out about Premier Danielle Smith's new provincial legislation and how it could drive investment from Alberta at a time when the oilpatch is finally back on its feet after several years in a downturn and as the province tries to keep its economy growing amid a possible recession.

There is no shred of evidence that the act will lead to economic growth, said Calgary Chamber of Commerce president Deborah Yedlin, who describes the confrontational nature of the policy as "troubling."

"Conversations that are about anything other than how we advance investment and technology and collaboration in this province is going to hinder those efforts," said CEO Kevin Krausert. For decades, Alberta politicians of all stripes have routinely criticized the federal government. Call it a political pastime. But, make no mistake, choosing not to enforce federal rules is a much more aggressive type of opposition to Ottawa.Smith became premier after winning the leadership of the United Conservative Party in October. During that leadership campaign, no policy was discussed more than the Sovereignty Act.

Savage remains in Smith's cabinet, now as environment minister. On Wednesday, she said her original concerns have been addressed as the legislation has been developed. The oilpatch wants billions of dollars to build dozens of carbon capture and storage projects in Alberta. The Sovereignty Act comes at a time when many companies in the oilpatch are looking for investment to decarbonize the sector and fuel the growth of new industries like hydrogen and carbon capture and sequestration.

maxfawcett CBC news? Ha! CBC hasn’t done their job for a decade. Bought and paid for. Evil shills, they masquerade in news face.

This is who they voted in and she is going to cause more damage. Is she politicizing the sovereign gesture or does she really believe it?

RosieBarton Since when does the CBC give a shit about AB’s future

It sure can't be any worse than what Trudeau/Liberals have done to drive away investment in Canada. I think it will be the opposite, being 'open for business', not driven away. TrudeauMustGo

RosieBarton Read Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba's lips. Ottawa, cut the shit and stay in your own lane. If it has to go to the Supreme Court, we are more than happy to be there. While that's going on, stay the fuck out and quit playing delusional fantasies in your mind as law.

hahaaa. drive to! invest in! believe there is more than just being a slab of taxable beef hanging in a liberal locker. 🇨🇦freedom for a new canada🇨🇦

Lies. AlbertaFirst

CBC, the dodo bird of journalism

CBC news... F.U.D

It will drive all the diddlers out ! Without Federal govt in the way it will promote it !

If I was planning on making a movie or doing any work in hospitality or theatre, I would now avoid Alberta. The government of ABPremierOffice can no longer be trusted to act in the best interests of everyone there, only a pathetic faux-aggrieved minority of whiners.

RosieBarton Exact opposite actually , market stability promotes investment, quite unlike the Trudeau regimes plan .

RosieBarton Nope. CBC and the NDP think this which is false. Nobody has scared more investment away in Canada then Trudeau and the NDP.

Ridiculous New investment has decreased due to Trudeau and his ideology driven gov. Plain and simple.

The Premier of Alberta is an unstable and unreliable leader. I would avoid the jurisdiction as an don't know what crackpot idea she's going to come up with from one day to the next.

Investment in the province? Trudeau made it so hard to do business in canada for the O&G companies it's a wonder they haven't all pulled stakes and left yet

Oh please. Give me a break with this nonsense narrative.

Premier Smith's proposed sovereignty act could drive investment away from Alberta: Calgary chamberThe Alberta Sovereignty within a United Canada Act could drive investment out of the province, the Calgary Chamber of Commerce warns. It could also attract it but that story can’t be told, right? Based on its newfound progressive ways the Chamber will be the one driving away investment. The goal is to drive Ottawa away. Why is it so bad to push for the same standing as Quebec in this Confederation? No one seems to want to answer that nor address the systemic discrimination of the west built into confederation….
