Theranos became a poster child for the potential pitfalls of the"fake it 'til you make it" mantra — particularly when it's adopted by founders focusing on health care.

Although both Balwani and Holmes faced much the same charges, his case, which began in March, was distinct from hers. His trial lacked much of the circus-like atmosphere and daily coverage that her trial attracted, almost certainly because he is a much less recognized and iconic figure. After her conviction, many appeared to believe his fate was a foregone conclusion.
