The name, Black Bubblegum Clothing, also has an interesting backstory. The inspiration, says Burchell, comes from a former infamous movie rental store that used to be in Yarmouth called 10-to-10 Video. They had a gumball machine, and if you managed to pull a black bubblegum, you got a free movie rental, she says.Burchell says she has always been creative, and ever since she was a small child, she knew she wanted to be an artist.

With a love for clothing and fashion, she figured why not create her own handmade and upcycled pieces. So, combining these two passions, Burchell created yet again — this time her own business. Although she started working towards this goal in 2018, she says it was the pandemic that really pushed her to get going in early 2020.

“I don't feel right designing items to have them made cheaply in an overseas factory just to maximize profits. I want to take junk that seems useless to others and give it a new life rather than it being thrown in a landfill,” says Burchell. Whenever Burchell creates something, she says it is truly one of a kind, so she doesn’t really have any items that are the most popular. She has, however, sold more chokers than anything else.
