"They said it's an 'early holiday break' but they're just telling us what we want to hear. They're laying us off since they lost orders," said Ms Liu, who was concerned about being targeted by government authorities for speaking out and asked to use a pseudonym. Meng Chao, another COVID testing kit production line worker, told the ABC that until the pandemic he had been a real estate agent.

"The pressure was big if I couldn't find a temporary job, so I joined when I saw the pharmaceutical factory opened and promised a good salary."Most testing booths were removed from street corners in early December.
