Editorial Board: “Just a reason for Oaks’ fellow Republicans, and fellow investors, to ignore him as much as possible and lead their party, and our economy, in a more responsible direction.”

Utah Treasurer Marlo Oaks at the Utah Republican Party election night party at the Hyatt Regency in Salt Lake City on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022.When calling out those who foolishly start a panic by shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theater, one should be careful not to start a rival, perhaps even larger and more irrational, stampede.with a spiel in which he says a widespread movement to measure the wisdom of investments by something other than just short-term financial gain is the work of Satan.

Sadly there are many others, up to and including Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and Attorney General Sean Reyes, who are also taking a stand against ESG investing. If in slightly less apocalyptic language.in support of a move in Congress to ban pension funds from so much as considering ESG factors in their investments. This is a call for government meddling in the marketplace that Cox and company might normally be expected to oppose.

ESG may or may not be a successful investing strategy. It may or may not be a genuine effort to promote the sustainable over the boom-and-bust. Or an attempt to appear to be green and responsible even as a particular investment firm continues to put money into Alaska oil and African rare Earth mines.

There is a risk, perhaps, that by calling attention to Oaks and his utterly absurd, Bible-thumping warning about threats that exist only in an increasing number of fevered imaginations, this bushwa will only gain currency.

'Environmental, social, and corporate governance, also known as environmental, social, governance, is a framework designed to be embedded into an organization's strategy that considers the needs and ways in which to generate value for all organizational stakeholders.'

This is why Utah is a top 10 propaganda extremist state.

You say ESG like it does not exist! It is communism and we know your Pravda

An actual headline in a 🇺🇲 newspaper. I want out.🛸

I had never heard of ESG before. But it strikes me as really odd that those that decry authoritarianism the most virulently, seem to be exactly the ones trying to set one up the hardest. A twisted, fateful end of times Christian theocracy, with nothing to lose.

ESG is on literally every website of every major corporation. They don't do it because it's 'liberal'. They do it because it makes economic sense. Calling it Satanic is bonkers. Here's Rio Tinto's, as an example, and ExxonMobil's as well.

Excellent work Mr. Oaks. We all know what the sl trib is really selling. And it isn't pretty.

I am very happy that I voted for this man. ESG is just another environmental tax on us. Try telling the truth tripuke.

According to Oaks, Satan is ethical, environmentally responsible, and socially conscious. Which would mean the God he worships is not. I think maybe he has them mixed up.

All he has to do is cite the World Economic Forum. You will own nothing and be happy. Seems like the fears are a little warranted.

F’ing Mormons 🤣🤣

Real-world people agree with Oaks.

I still want to know why the temple restoration goes down into the depths of the earth as far up as the office building is tall. Elevator to hell

Emerson Snake & Goober

'something called ESG' : precisely most people dont know anything about it and those who do -- like Oaks -- will be criticized for knowing WAY MORE about it than they do (like those of us who knew way more about the vaxx than those who just accepted the Tribune's take on it)

Environmental, Social, and Governance.... sounds more like something Jesus would say

I have to note (as a Jew) that all the Trib haters and LDS folks sure are mean. Calling people names? Using “Liberal” as a swear word? C’mon Christians, let’s try to understand and be respectful to each other.

PC, Social Justice (so called), Green Revolution, CRT-now-DEI & ESG all spring from the same rotted root. These practices benefit a select few offloading unjust suffering upon the rest of the world. ESG is an economic evil, snide critiques (in this article) notwithstanding.

ESG is commie bs and has already been the downfall of banks and companies

ESG is in ramen noodle flavor packet

Cue the winning. 'They are being neutral & publishing the truth as it is. The good, the bad & the ugly. We prefer the church hide from us or sugarcoat it as they have done for far too long. How dare they burst our bubble or ask people to think. Wah'

Organized Religion is here to CONTROL YOU

The Utah way

Citing made up stories?

Just unbelievable that a framework for good corporate governance incorporating environmental and social considerations would cause such a frenzy among far right in Utah. What is going on?

Organized Religion is a scam .

The Trib can't talk about anything without letting its bigotry and hate for all things LDS seep through ('crazed theocracy led by conspiracy theorists').

Crackpot.

Liberals rambling nonsense

There is no book of Revelations in the Bible.

The Trib can't talk about anything without letting it's bigotry and hate for all things LDS seep through ('crazed theocracy led by conspiracy theorists').

Bombed on this one for sure.

Barf slctrib

ESG - unsustainable as well as a grift SLC Trib - an uninformed, trend following embarassment A perfect match. So glad I don't live in that garbage town.

Umm, you do realize Cox is loathed by the UT GOP? He doesn’t even attend Conventions for fear of heckling videos going viral.

Always thought it was “hooting and hollering.” 🤷‍♂️

God bless the “crazed theocracy” known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! MakeItATrillion

Investing is tough to forecast but invoking the fiction of religion on this idea is empirically discrediting. Please tell me he has another way to make his case.

Hey , FYI: gas, oil, and coal are very sustainable and should remain the wave of the future.

I would only say, it's hooting and hollering. You go down to the hootenanny, not the hoopenanny.

I agree, however, holy word salad, Batman. Did the editorial board not have an editor check this statement?

This is weirdly worded.

Great memo. The trib knows what’s just , kind and aware. Do I need permission to repost lol Twitter nice Ty Ty

Ugh. ESG is such a terrible idea. It is, at its core, a way to coerce businesses and investors to push ideology over being financially sound and successful.

Real Republicans that like esg... Sorry, you have it backwards. See, the trib, like President Biden, thinks the only good Republicans are the ones that roll over to their false, woke climate, gender, and abortion agenda.

Bwahaha. 🤪🤪🙃

WRONG AGAIN. How does this sloppy rag stay in business? Who is subsidizing the Trib?

Should be “whooping and hollering,” not “hooping and hollering,” FYI

Oaks has been very articulate about ESG. ESG is an end-run around individual liberty.

I get the impression that Governor Cox and the rest of the Utah leadership do not care what the rest of the world thinks about them or about Utah....

Editorial: 'LDS Church... bla bla bla ... evil ... bla bla bla ... bad ....'

Your industry is dead

What are the current sustainable alternatives? Wind is incredibly in efficient and solar panels leach toxic cancer causing chemicals into the ground as well and kill wildlife. They also don't work when covered in snow.

No
