A coalition of digital distributors, along with Spotify and Amazon Music, have launched Music Fights Fraud to attempt to eradicate the issue.

Streaming fraud and streaming manipulation is nothing new to the music business, costing artists and platforms hundreds of millions of dollars — and— each year. But lately, the industry has finally begun to confront the problem in a more cohesive, coherent way. In that spirit, a new coalition of digital music companies announced on Wednesday the formation of Music Fights Fraud, “a global task force aimed at eradicating streaming fraud,” the organization said.

“Downtown holds trust and safety for our clients and industry partners as a core pillar of our organization,” Downtown Music Holdings CEOsaid in a statement. “We are proud to combine forces with our colleagues across the industry and build on the fantastic work already developed at Downtown to identify and address abusive streaming behavior.

According to the report published Monday, the number of publicly listed corporations aiming for net zero increased from 417 to 929 since late 2020. Researchers say they found that less than 5% of the companies they examined met basic credibility criteria. They say companies often fail to include the emissions caused by their products in their emission tallies. The idea behind net zero is to stop adding planet-warming gas to the atmosphere, either by preventing emissions in the first place or removing an equivalent amount.
