Andy Mitten reflects on his conversation with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the ex-Manchester United boss' first big interview since being sacked

manager. He’s right. My heart sank too at that moment, although logic says it shouldn’t have. It meant Villa won the match 1-0 but it was only United’s first defeat of the 2021-22 season, six games in following four wins and a draw. It shouldn’t have felt like a major issue after a top start, but it did.I got to know Solskjaer when he was playing for United as a supersub striker.

It wasn’t. United finished third that season and reached the semi-finals of three cup competitions. There had been a big uptick whenarrived in the January and a strong case for progress. Which signings did he think worked? And which didn’t go as planned? I’ve asked him several times since he left United to talk. He didn’t want to, which I respected. In May, he agreed, which he reads and respects. The main feeling from readers was that they were glad to hear he was still around and OK. They wanted to know what he was up to — so I persevered until he agreed to another interview.
