Despite its plant-based origins, the hot dog passes for the real deal, initial snap included.

It’s the sort of boast that starts bar fights. A vegan hot dog, launched in London on May 10, “is identical to its pork counterpart in taste, smell and texture,” its creators claim. But does it live up the billing?

“It’s incredibly important, that first bite,” says Simeon Van Der Molen, founder of Moving Mountains, the company behind the dog. Although this hot dog doesn’t have a skin — in common with classic hot dogs like the “skinless beef Franks” made by Nathan’s of Coney Island, for example — there’s a tautness to the surface, a perceptible resistance when you bite into it, that feels right.“You’ve got to be able to separate between what is the bread and what is the ‘meat,’ ” Van Der Molen says.

The hot dog is entirely plant-based, Van Der Molen says, with additional ingredients including onions , carrots and paprika. The ingredients are mixed into a paste, then shaped into a hot dog and cooked. Finally, it is smoked in a smokehouse — there’s no fake flavoring here. Sunflower seeds work well for the paste, Van Der Molen says, but they’re also nutritious: high in B complex vitamins, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, vitamin E and protein.

“The reason why we’ve made it so identical [to a classic hot dog sausage] is to appeal to people that love hot dogs,” he says. “We want to create a product that everybody can eat without that label on there of ‘vegan,’ which can deter people from trying food. This is something that everyone can eat.”

Never

No way.

This is stupid. Sorry, it’s just really stupid.

There’s no such thing as ‘vegan meat’ or ‘hot dog’ as there’s nothing as ‘cabbage wing’ or ‘broccoli ribs’.

Hot dogs are made up of everything that would have been thrown away. It's recycling, man! Hot dogs are protecting the environment! Saving this planet! Long live hotdogs!!😁

As long as we know exactly what the “vegan” is.

No, I'll just eat a salad.

I have tried some vegan 'meats' and they were delicious 👌

But can it beat Hebrew National

But what type of hot dog? A Sabrette? A Hebrew National? A Goorsch? A Vienna beef? An Eisenberg?

I don't understand why vegans and vegetarians feel compelled to eat things that imitate meat. If you don't want to eat meat, don't, or if you're like me, if you want to eat a hot dog eat a goddamned hot dog. Preferably something with a natural casing such as a McKenzie hot dog

There hamburgers are great also. They have the taste right down to where it belongs . Thank you

No. If you're a vegan why do you want fake meat?

If people want to eat Veggies then eat veggies no problem, but if people want to Eat Meat 🍖 make sure its the real Thing. Don't Call it a Hotdog.

Compete how? As a substitute dildo. Maybe. As food? No.

.MorningStrFarms corn dogs are quite good for a quick meal from the freezer.

Nope

Beyond Meat hot dogs are 👌🏽

Mystery Meat? If you hate meat, why make imitation variations of it?

no, No and a BIG NO! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have nothing against being vegan. However, I do suspect the motives in trying to make some vegan foods taste like their meatier originals. Why is this necessary? Is the idea to fool children into eating vegan? Or get adults into veganism like some strange conversion therapy.

Nothing referred to as vegan can compare to anything real.

Anything has to be healthier and taste better than the scraps they put into mystery meat hot dogs.

Nothing compares to a Loma Linda Linkette

Certainly, if they taste good.

There are other leaders bluesforces

In women’s sports, it can probably dominate.

No

With a kale bun. Poor snowflakes! They aren’t outliving meat eaters either.

Let’s compare ingredients: Vegan hot dog: soy, twigs, tree bark, spices Real hot dogs: everything but the oink. Advantage: real hot dogs.

oh, I hope so. Dogs are so good, but so bad.

Everyone has to be burried or cremated. ....Either early or late.....Animal might be thinking like this ?

Good food 🍤🍗🍴🍴

I'm sure highly processed vegetable protein will be able to effectively replicate the mediocre taste & texture of the the typical commercial hot dog.

That looks delicious 👌👌

What's the point of eating a hot dog if it's not really a hot dog?

No.

How do I short this company?

As long as it is hot dog it can..!!

So many soy boys....... meat eaters protect society

The real cost of cutting the cord: What streaming companies don’t want you to knowDo it wrong, and cord-cutters might end up paying more than traditional cable, which is exactly what streaming companies don’t want you to realize. only get one streaming service at a time. Only if you get every streaming service available. I have Netflix ($12/mo) and Prime (about $10/mo). Once a year, I get HBO for 2 months and then cancel ($15/mo). How is this more expensive? I have sling, Netflix, hbo now, and Hulu, all for less than dish charges (yes, I know dish owns slings), and I can EASILY cancel anytime.
