This was revealed by a new study released by South African Cultural Observatory on Thursday, focusing on the period between March 20 and May 4.

On average 63% of all respondents experienced cancellation of work that had been scheduled before the end of April 2020. A further 30% experienced cancellation, or indefinite postponement, of work that had been scheduled before the end of May. The report further shows that the sector shutdown is expected to reduce South Africa’s GDP by R99,7bn in 2020.

Thirty eight percent of responses were from firms with employees, and the other 62% were from individual freelancers. About 65% are operating formal businesses and 35% were informal, or unregistered, and while 82% have a yearly turnover of less than R5m .
