A shop which has supplied Melbourne food lovers with Italian delicacies will close after 70 years.

Enoteca Sileno in Carlton will wind back as owners John and Rosemary Portelli are both approaching 70 and plan to retire.

"⁠⁠We have been on this epic culinary adventure for over 40 years, building on what Gino started and dedicating ourselves to the family business and Australia's burgeoning love affair with Italian food," the couple said in a statement. Italian cake Panettone was also introduced to Australia by Di Santo after he moved to Australia in the 1950s.The company said he was part of the 'Spaghetti Mafia' which sought to improve liquor licensing in Australian restaurants, which resulted in the provision of licensed dining after 8pm.
