In the 1960s, Steve, now known as Steven Smith, grew up in a terraced house in Wolverhampton. His father, Keith, worked on a stall in Bilston Market. The idea for Poundland, now known as Poundland, was born in the 1990s when Steve noticed that they made more money on items priced between 10p and £1. In 1990, Steven opened his first Poundland store in Burton upon Trent with a £50,000 loan from his father. The business quickly grew despite initial skepticism from landlords and shopping centers.
By 1995, Poundland had established a head office and distribution center in Wolverhampton. The family’s success with Poundland led to the purchase of Ludstone Hall in 1997 for £2.5 million. Now, Steven is selling the house, a place filled with memories and filled with luxury features such as a retractable dance floor and a large hot tub
