An Australian mining company, Cassius Mining, has filed a $443 million claim against the Ghanaian government for multiple contract breaches. The company alleges that these breaches led to the loss of its entire gold mine in Ghana. Cassius claims that a neighboring Chinese-state-linked mining company, Shaanxi (now known as Earl International), illegally mined its concession and stole millions of dollars worth of gold.
The company also accuses Shaanxi of causing dozens of deaths in northern Ghana due to poisonous gases released from its mines. Cassius claims the Ghanaian government has supported Shaanxi despite multiple allegations of human rights abuses, environmental destruction, and theft, while shutting down Cassius' operations. Cassius filed the claim, witness statements, and independent expert reports at the International Tribunal in London on Tuesday
