Now, Uber, Lyft and other competitors are scaling up to win over drivers and riders in Canada's third-largest city.
Despite a metro-area population of roughly 2.5 million, Canada's third-largest city remained without ride-hailingBut groundwork to get the city up and running on Lyft started years ago. In 2018, the company poached Aaron Zifkin from Airbnb to head up its efforts in the entire country — and almost two years later, the service finally launched.
There was definitely a lot of excitement around just having that spontaneity that we all enjoy with ride-sharing and the cities that we live in that unfortunately they didn't have for so long. It's now a reality there. : How long did it take to have all the processes in place to be ready to give rides? What did that entail? Obviously entering into Canada, we learned a lot through our expansion and we were very deliberate on which markets we're expanding to.
Other than that, we had to get some of the nuances of the city mapped and making sure that all of the venues [show]. Were there any big differences in attracting riders and drivers given that you and Uber were both starting at the same time, as opposed to other markets when you might have been first or second? Starting a market where there was no ride-sharing certainly requires different, uh, you know, a different level of investment.
