Isiah Thomas, the National Basketball Association Hall of Famer and legendary Detroit Piston, has created a business portfolio that rivals his storied basketball career.

Last month, he took over as the CEO of One World Pharma, a Las Vegas-based company that grows hemp and cannabis in Colombia, when company founder Craig Ellins retired. Thomas is also the owner of another cannabis company, Vesl Oils, which operates in Colorado and Oklahoma.“I had one of my brothers pass away from cancer, then my mother died, and finally my father died from cancer. And I remember, at the end, all of them were struggling with their appetite,” said Thomas.

But the fact that a doctor has prescribed the plant as a serious treatment option challenged Thomas’ conception of cannabis. Now, he’s banking on something similar happening across America; the broader acceptance of cannabis as a healing plant with profound therapeutic potential, particularly when it comes to CBD.
