Sweden stayed open while other countries locked down — with 5,700 dead, critics are questioning if the gamble went horribly wrong

Paul Rhys for Business Insider Weekly

But by April it was becoming clear that Sweden was in trouble. The death rate began rocketing upward, and for one week in May, the country had the highest number of deaths per capita in the world,Meanwhile, its European neighbors employed strict lockdowns and suffered far fewer casualties. To make matters worse, the Swedish economy also suffered as many Swedes took it upon themselves to stay home.

Tallinger believes it was a mistake to keep so many people with COVID-19 in care homes rather than transfer them to intensive care units, where they would have stood a far greater chance of survival. "I certainly believe that earlier use of more extensive, personal protective equipment in the care homes would have also had an impact."

Denmark also closed its borders to Sweden in March — and kept them closed as their case numbers continued to diverge. "I think Sweden was hit a lot harder than it could have been, but also spared a lot of the sickness and death that it would have likely experienced if not for the action of individual citizens," Kasson said.Gym operations manager Maria Persson said despite staying open through the pandemic, business has slowed, and she's still taken a financial hit.mobile phone data

This is a ridiculous article. Sweden’s strategy has proved successful. Their early setbacks and mortality rates were due to poor nursing facility strategies not because they stayed open. Now they have single digit daily deaths and low cases. It worked!

No one gives a shit about the per 100,000 metric. Based on total population of 10+ million, I’d say they kicked ass.

Deaths only half of the equation. We have lost 3 million jobs in a poor African country. This second crisis will be even worse. How many did Sweden lose, serious question?
