In an email to Apple leadership, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney laid out plans to intentionally violate Apple's App Store terms of service.

Last week, the wildly popular game "Fortnite" got an update on Apple and Android smartphones that allowed players to bypass the companies' digital payment systems. Instead of going through Apple and Google, payments went directly to the "Fortnite" studio, Epic Games.

In a new legal filing, Apple revealed that Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney sent declaration of war to Apple CEO Tim Cook and other execs. "I'm writing to tell you that Epic will no longer adhere to Apple's payment processing restrictions," Sweeney said. "We choose to follow this path in the firm belief that history and law are on our side.

Two months earlier, on June 30, Sweeney had begun an email exchange with the Apple execs, requesting the company to allow a "competing Epic Games Store app" to be available on the App Store so "consumers would have an opportunity to pay less for digital products and developers would earn more from their sales."

Following the update to "Fortnite" that included the ability to pay Epic directly, Apple removed the game from the store and nixed Epic's developer contract. Instead of buying in-game virtual money through Apple or Google, players could buy it directly from Epic — at a discount, no less.

It’s not fair. Apple should have the monopoly on that. It’s their platform

I think it's time that epic games look into developing their own apps for Android and Apple products so that they can launch epic games on mobile without the need to go through third parties
