Ives, Osha, and Ross Gerber — the CEO of Tesla investor Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management — said they expect Tesla will reveal that it's working on proprietary cells.
Osha believes that in the near term, those developments will center on the dry electrode technology developed by Maxwell Technologies, a battery startup Tesla bought in 2019, which Maxwell saysIn the long run, Tesla may look to make more fundamental changes to the lithium-ion chemistry used in today's EV batteries, possibly eliminating metals like cobalt, which are expensive and sometimes mined by companies that use child labor.
"This issue of whether Tesla becomes the master of its own fate in cells is actually really, really important," Osha said.Ives expects Tesla to announce a battery cell that can last for 1 million miles and be produced at a cost at or near $100 per kilowatt-hour, a price experts say will allow EVs to be sell for prices comparable to those of cheaper gas-powered cars.
