During level 5 of the national lockdown last year, companies like his could not operate because they did not provide essential services. This meant a loss of income for him and his employees. The business was lucky to receive Covid-19 relief funds worth R80,000 from the Small Enterprise Finance Agency. The money bought more sewing machines to meet the increased demand for cloth face masks.

“We made it to the list and were able to get business from various clients. In some instances, we had to outsource other products like sanitisers for our clients. We stayed afloat as a business,” Shabangu says.
