HANOI: Vietnam is turning off street lights and manufacturers are switching operations to off-peak hours to keep the national power system running amid record temperatures in some areas that have caused a surge in demand.

Temperatures this week are expected to range between 26 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius, weather officials say. Last week Vietnam called for electrical devices to be turned off when not in use, and for air-conditioning to be kept above 26 degrees Celsius.
