Nationals Senator Matt Canavan recognises the government’s need to raise net revenue, but opposes raising visa costs for tourists and backpackers.

Mr Canavan’s proposed solution was to further charge migrants who choose to live in Australia permanently.

“That seems more sense to me than slugging the tourist industry, which is already struggling given the high-cost nature of doing business in Australia,” he told Sky News Australia.
