Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke is considering exemptions for small business from the Albanese government’s next wave of industrial relations reforms that include stronger rights for casual workers who want to convert to permanent employment.

Small business exemptions already apply for existing casual conversion rules, which were introduced by the Morrison government and require employers to offer casuals permanent employment after 12 months.would threaten small businesses’ flexibility and discourage them from hiring. He said “casual employment is particularly important for small business, especially in retail and hospitality, where businesses need to be able to roster according to demand and the casual’s availability”.

While a bill is still to be finalised, Mr Burke’s office has already engaged Senator Pocock on the proposals.
