The government says there's been massive interest in a new immigration stream to bolster Alberta's hospitality industry, but an expert is raising concerns with the criteria.

WATCH: A new immigration stream aimed at temporary foreign workers went into effect this month in Alberta – designed to fill jobs in the hospitality sector. As Carolyn Kury de Castillo reports, concerns are being raised about workers being exploited.The provincial government says there has been “overwhelming interest” in a new immigration stream benefiting Alberta’s hospitality industry since it started March 1.

Temporary foreign workers will be eligible if they’ve worked in tourism and hospitality for at least six months and have a permanent job offer from an employer. Jason Foster is an associate professor of human resources and labour relations at Athabasca University and director of Parkland Institute at the University of Alberta. Foster has concerns with the program.
