Beecham House, a new ITV show depicting a former East India Company trader in the nineteenth century, has faced criticism for its comparatively sympathetic portrayal of its protagonist. Earlier films and programmes like BBC’s Taboo, the popular 1980s sitcom The Jewel in the Crown and even the Pirates of the Caribbean series have portrayed Company officials in an overwhelmingly negative light.
