Badly designed bathrooms, hidden light switches, confusing airport layouts – here are the biggest fails in the world of travel.

Travel is a privilege. To complain about its trivial tribulations can be to blunder into the unedifying quicksand of “First World Problems”. Still, we’re only human, and who doesn’t like a good whinge, especially regarding their holidays? We all have our shared annoyances while travelling. We’ve all wondered who gets paid to design dysfunctional hotel rooms, and whether upmarket meals are really worth a chef’s ransom.

You only need to look at hotel, restaurant and airline reviews to see the same niggling complaints aired again and again. Here are ours. They may have you nodding in recognition, or leaping up in protest, so let’s call this list of pet hates a conversation starter. You’ll surely want to add more. So adjust your hotel’s mood lighting – if you can – and settle down as we romp through 20 epic travel fails. Totally inconsequential, very First World, but vastly irritating.Well, nothing. Turndown’s purpose is never explained. We presume hotel managers believe guests are incapable of peeling back sheets to get into bed.
