Ont. college and university funding will be tied to graduates' earnings, minister says onpoli

The Progressive Conservative government announced in its recent budget that it will start tying more funding for the province's colleges and universities to performance outcomes.

Only a small proportion of funding has been linked to institutional performance in recent years - 1.4 per cent for universities and 1.2 per cent for colleges - but that will go up to 60 per cent in the next five years. On budget day, the government could not specify what criteria would be used to evaluate performance, but Training, Colleges and Universities Minister Merrilee Fullerton listed some today in the legislature.

She says the metrics will include student graduation rate, experiential learning opportunities, graduate earnings, graduate employment and skills and competencies.

That's just rediculous! It is not simply feasible to monetize economic impacts of graduates of all decoplines (i.e. social sciences and humanity).

Someone needs to read up on the purpose and history of university education vs. vocational training. TL;DR one is about the quest for knowledge, the other is about acquiring job-specific skills. Somewhere along the way, we’ve conflated the two.

Seriously. Another moronic statement from a MPP who has trouble understanding the purpose of higher education. Then again she is probably a grad from a Cracker Jack box.

Teaching to tests doesn't work in high school. Why would it work in university.? A well rounded society needs a variety of skills, many of which don't show up on balance sheets. At least be honest and say that education is not important, and Ontario is not really open.

How PC gov. is going to collect the employment data of the graduates since not all of the University/College students are from Ontario or matter fact Canada? Even those from Ontario, move around the country, even world. PC must be living in a small city with very small vision.

Still think medical college fees should be waved if students agree to work in areas they are needed.

This will light a fire under a few asses. Nicely done.

No interest in touring downtown Ottawa.

I cannot believe how Ford's fellow party members selected him as their leader. How did he convince them that he is the best from the rest? And the rest of us, got him as a leader without a choice. Otherwise he would have been elected as a MPP, if PC had thought about it deeply.

Just when you think he couldn't do anything dumber...

Again, the ignorant 'buck a beer' crowd is out in full force!

Doug Ford is a 10th grade dropout. The education minister has a degree in Agriculture. Her assistant was home schooled. These are the people deciding the education system. I will never understand why people voted for this circus act.

What an absolute joke

Last I checked it is 'percent' not 'per cent' ... maybe me English is wrong.

College dropouts making educational policies now

this is the stupidest fucking thing ever

Cheese and crackers! It'll cost millions to collect, compile, and compute that information. There are no $ savings here. (To say nothing about this obvious attack on education) onpoli

I would agree. There are some pretty ridiculous courses out there.

Open for business

Nice FordD150

Bye bye grievance studies.

GOOD!!!! Tax payer money should not be going to useless courses.
