Landslide in northern Malawi kills three, injures many via SABCNewsOnline

Rumphi police spokesperson Tupeliwe Kabwilo told AFP that incessant rains in the area led to the landslide early Saturday which washed away an entire village nestled between Mphompha Hills and Lake Malawi. The missing persons, who are feared dead, include a one-year-old boy, two other boys aged six and 10 as well as two women aged 35 and 46.

“Huge boulders rolled from the mountain and these are the ones that cause the biggest damage and if the missing victims are buried under these rocks, then we will need an excavator to move them.” said council official Wakisa Mtete. He added that it was also possible for some of the missing bodies to have been washed into the lake, in which case the bodies would resurface within the next two days.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: The run-up to elections thwarts Africa’s M&A activity and South Africa is not sparedSouth Africa is not the only country in sub-Saharan Africa facing a make-or-break general election in 2019. Citizens in more than seven countries will be heading to the polls, among them Benin, Madagascar, Malawi, and Botswana. Any build-up to elections makes the business community nervous and this is starting to reflect in mergers and acquisitions indicators. If the latest data is anything to go by, companies and investors are deferring big investment decisions until various election cycles are over. This deferral is also evident in South Africa.
