Federal regulators should hold Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg 'individually liable for the company's repeated violations of Americans' privacy,' Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden said Tuesday, including imposing penalties that apply directly to the chief executive.

Senate Finance Committee ranking member Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., left, sitting next to Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. By Tony Romm Tony Romm Staff writer covering technology policy Email Bio Follow April 23 at 1:14 PM Federal regulators should hold Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg “individually liable for the company’s repeated violations of Americans’ privacy,” Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden said Tuesday in a letter to the Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC has been probing Facebook since March 2018 to determine if it violated a 2011 agreement with the government to better protect the private data of its users. Wyden’s call for accountability follows a report by the Post last week that the FTC is reviewing Zuckerberg’s past statements and could seek more oversight of his leadership as part of a settlement to end the federal inquiry.

Under its 2011 agreement with the FTC, Facebook is required to give users greater notice and control over what happens with their data, and violations could carry steep fines. In its current investigation, agency has sought to seek a fine from Facebook ranging into the billions of dollars, sources previously told the Post.

A settlement could also include a requirement that the company’s board of directors exercise more oversight of Facebook’s privacy practices, according to people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to speak on the record because the talks are confidential under law. “Given Mr. Zuckerberg’s deceptive statements, his personal control over Facebook, and his role in approving key decisions related to the sharing of user data, the FTC can and must hold Mr. Zuckerberg personally responsible for these continued violations,” Wyden wrote. “The FTC must also make clear the significant and material penalties that will apply to both Facebook the corporate and Mr. Zuckerberg the individual should any future violations occur.

Mark Zuckerberg should be used for violating the right of free speech.

I’m no fan of Zuck’s, but I’d really love it if Congress makes EVERY executive responsible & accountable for the crimes of their Corp.

Just change the name to Shamebook. The name change suits it for multiple reasons.

I agree with this 100 percent.

OK so then are we gonna actually hold every CEO accountable for their company's fuck ups? Cause I'm behind that 100%.

When will you at last send him serve a life sentence in a supermax, which he deserves ten times?

So Zuckerberg is responsible for Facebook's missteps...BUT Trump ISN'T responsible for his Administration's malfeasances.

AGREED!!!!

Yeah, that's true

Those violations were baked in and planned with the aim to make money. Made Mr. Zuckerberg very wealthy which he promptly hid in a Foundation. An immoral crook is a crook. Europe doesn't tolerate privacy violations, we should do the same. Glad I reduced FB use

He should be impeached for collusion!

I think who you described as 'top lawmaker' is actually a demented GOP Senator.

Yes correct but he is a Dem so charges would be dropped

you don't say......

Yet, drug companies and banks aren’t responsible for opioid epidemic or collapse of banking and housing markets. Get real.

Then all CEO’s in America should be also. Let’s see how many people want the job.

Here for it 🙌🏻🙌🏻
