A consortium comprising Centerbridge, Cerberus and Fortress abandoned plans to bid for Inmarsat last week, Sky News learns.

A takeover of the business, which comes amid fierce competition in the capital-intensive satellite sector, will return it to private ownership 15 years after it became a listed company.

It was unclear on Friday whether the three firms had decided against making a formal offer because of the premium they would have been required to offer, or whether they had had difficulty securing the necessary financing. Consolidation in the satellite sector has been a constant expectation among investors for years, as the cost of rolling out new technology has put strain on corporate balance sheets.

Last year, EchoStar, an American company, tabled an offer for Inmarsat that was rejected by the London-listed company's board.
