Business Maverick: Diamond Trading Goes Online as Lucara Takes on Industry Goliaths By Bloomberg

An employee sorts through a large collection of rough diamonds on a sorting table at the United Selling Organisation of Alrosa PJSC sorting center in Moscow, Russia, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019. Alrosa PJSC, one of the world’s top diamond miners, is returning to crisis-stricken Zimbabwe, the latest example of Russia expanding its footprint in Africa.

In a series of trials, Vancouver, Canada-based Lucara claims that prices were 8 percent over Lucara’s traditional market price. It’s now trying to bring other independent producers on board, with the aim of moving at least a portion of the $18 billion annual diamond trade onto its site called Clara. Clara incorporates blockchain technology, which is seen as a promising avenue for an industry that has been plagued by ethical problems, including the trade in so-called “blood diamonds” used to finance armed conflicts. Lucara is far from the only miner who has seen the benefits of the digital ledger in guaranteeing the provenance of its product.

BUSINESS MAVERICK: Shoprite’s R3.3bn payout proposal to Christo Wiese could easily be voted downWhen a company puts out an announcement involving R3.3bn on a Thursday afternoon before a long weekend, you have to wonder. And that is what the financial community has been doing about Shoprite’s proposal to pay its chairman R3.3bn for high voting-power shares with an actual monetary value of, well, nothing. There are some who think it’s a deal worth doing, but some significant shareholders on Tuesday said, very firmly, they would be voting against the proposal. The deal could very easily fail. Former Steinhoff Chairman Christo (I know nothing, I am the victim) Wiese who presided over the biggest financial disaster in SA, should all his assets frozen NOW. It will be immoral not to vote this down, otherwise you are all accomplices

Business Maverick: The spectre of stagflation is haunting South Africa and the alternative is also scarySouth Africa's economy does not have a lot in its favour at the moment. Relatively moderate inflation in recent years has been one of the few bright spots. Even this has been a mixed blessing as it partly stems from subdued demand. This could change soon, with price pressures unrelated to consumption building in the economy. Against the backdrop of anaemic growth and sky-high unemployment, this could unleash the spectre of stagflation. And if prices do remain subdued, it is only because of the dire state of the economy.
