The Western Australian Labor government is unlikely to follow moves by eastern states to impose compulsory requirements for union agreements.

Already a subscriber? The Western Australian Labor government is unlikely to follow the eastern states and impose compulsory requirements for union agreements on major infrastructure projects, saying it wants to deliver “best possible value” for taxpayers.

“I think it certainly opens the door to that type of behaviour. It very well could have contributed to the power of unions, and particularly the power to control who could and who couldn’t work on big public, Big Build jobs.”Mr Pollock said the construction industry in WA was not currently plagued with the same issues as Victoria and NSW.

It is understood there is little appetite within the state government for compulsory requirements, similar to what has recently been implemented in Queensland, to be adopted in WA.
