The earnings season overall has been solid.

This quarter: Analysts expect earnings and revenue to have remained little changed from the year-earlier period, according to LSEG. What CNBC is watching: Investors will look through Caterpillar's report for clues on the state of the global economy, given the company's worldwide presence. Over the past three months, shares have fallen 4.3%. What history shows: The industrial giant's earnings have beaten expectations for five straight quarters, Bespoke data shows.
