An American company that owns the majority of Banff and Jasper’s most popular tourist attractions is under fire from its Canadian competitors.

Business owners in Banff and Jasper are concerned about the number of attractions that are being bought up by companies based outside of Canada.

“That’s what monopolistic power does,” he told CTV News. “And the reason it matters is if you’re coming to Banff, you’re going to pay a lot more money to see these attractions, and you’re not going to have any alternatives because they have choked off all the competition.”Along with the SkyTram, the firm’s subsidiary Pursuit operates the Banff Gondola at Sulphur Mountain, the Columbia Icefield Skywalk, the Columbia Icefield Adventure, the Lake Minnewanka Cruise and Jasper’s Maligne Lake Cruise.

“They really do have essentially monopoly power within the region — especially in the summer destination and attraction — which makes it hard to compete,” Banff Sunshine Village’s Kendra Scurfield added. “We work diligently to ensure thoughtful and sustainable growth within the tourism communities in which we live, work and play and continue to be committed to supporting the communities we live in,” the statement reads.Several businesses, public areas in Jasper National Park and townsite now open, slated to open soonCanada's unemployment rate at 6.
