Three South Australian growers are currently under quarantine, infected by a major threat to a $5,800,000,000 industry. The Northern Adelaide Plains growers’ produce tested positive for tomato brown rugose fruit virus , which affects tomatoes, capsicums and chillies. The virus — which is listed on the National Priority Plant Pest list — was first detected on August 5 and the source of infection remains unknown.
“Tracing has shown some other states may have also received potentially infected seed, and these jurisdictions have been informed and are conducting follow-up testing,” SA’s Department of Primary Industries and Regions said. “ToBRFV is a highly contagious plant virus and regarded as a considerable threat to Australia’s $5.8 billion vegetable industry due to reduced yield and quality of produce.
