Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh highlights the challenge of securing sponsorships for the Malaysian sports industry due to a lack of confidence from potential sponsors. She emphasizes the need for transparency in how funds are utilized, focusing on athlete development rather than operational expenses.

Petaling Jaya: Youth and Sports Minister, Hannah Yeoh acknowledged that the difficulty of the sports industry in the country to gain confidence from sponsors has led them to be reluctant to provide sponsorship. Hannah said that most sponsors want to see the funds given channeled towards sports development for athletes and not used for salary payments. “I see, in Malaysia, we actually don't have a lack of sponsors. We have a lack of confidence for sponsors to give money.

When sponsors give money, they want to make sure it is brought to sports development for athletes. “They don't want to see it paid as salaries or used for things that are not related to things like organizing competitions. “Like us, when we give matching sports grants of RM30 to RM40 million per year, we also assess the list of expenses that they bring in the paper, some of which may be unnecessary. “Some organize competitions but include things like singing from influencers for RM10,000. It's actually not necessary,” she said in the SAMBANG podcast organized by the Malaysian Sports Writers Association (SAM). In addition, Hannah also informed that the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) will cooperate with the Sports Commissioner (PJS) to give a grading to sports associations. She said that the grading will be evaluated based on several aspects, including financial management and the involvement of women in the administration of the sports associations. “Can we reach 30 percent of women on the committee and the involvement of former athletes in the association because these sports associations, their role is not just to organize competitions, they are responsible for talent development and coaching courses. “Everything about sports, the association needs to play a role, but what I see now, many associations just come to KBS asking for money. ‘If you don't give money, I don't do it, if you don't give money, I don't have a program, I don't develop talent
