These teen sisters cooked bath bombs in their kitchen. Now it’s a $20 million-plus per year business ForbesUnder30

As 10 and 11 year olds, bathtime was boring time for sporty sisters Isabel and Caroline Bercaw. To make things more interesting, they used bath bombs, but were disappointed by the lack of surprise and messiness in the products. That year, 2012, they started cooking their own: simply mixing baking soda, citric acid and fragrance oils together with bonus surprises in the middle. They called their kitchen sink company Da Bomb Bath Fizzers.

It’s a family affair: mom Kim is CEO and dad Ben is COO/CFO of the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based company. Previously a fulltime mom, Kim Bercaw became chief exec in 2015. When the Bercaw women plus three fulltime employees were making and selling 20,000 bath bombs per month from the family basement in 2015, dad Ben left his management consulting gig to join in his executive operations and finance role.

Because the girls were too young to be licensed drivers, dad rented a U-Haul, filled it with Da Bomb, and the trio drove to the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market, which brings buyers as small as mom-and-pop and as big as Target, to discover new goodies for their shelves. Luckily for the Bercaws, they attracted retailers of all sizes: entering the show with 40 retailer clients and leaving with 80, including the aforementioned fellow Minneapolis-based megachain.

And with the demands of school and business, they make time for fun—visiting museums and historic venues on family trips. They note favorite destinations as anything they can hike, the MoMA in New York, the Seattle Art Museum and Smithsonian in DC.
