Opinion | Statehood for DC and Puerto Rico is not a partisan issue, it's about finally making good on America's promise of equal rights. By ciovenko.

President Donald Trump throws a paper towel roll as he visits the Cavalry Chapel in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico on October 3, 2017The American citizens of Puerto Rico and Washington, DC deserve to have a say in how they are governed.

By not granting equal access to the polls to all American citizens, we have tilted the plane of our democracy towards those who already have the franchise, specifically white Americans. The predominately white Americans who live in the sparsely populated Western states have an outsized and anti-democratic political power in both the Senate and the Electoral College.

It doesn't have to be that way; throughout our history, both the Democratic and Republican parties have radically changed their ideology and policies in order to attract votes, stay relevant, and to stay in power. This is as it should be; an American political party that can't win the votes of the majority of its citizens cedes its legitimacy and its right to political power.
