SINGAPORE: The recent decision by the United Nations to remove cannabis from the most tightly controlled category of narcotic drugs is one that is driven by the"power of money", said Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Saturday .for Recommendation 5.1, which states that cannabis and cannabis resin should be deleted from Schedule IV of the 1961 Convention – a global text governing drug controls."I put this down to the power of money.

"It should be doctors and medical associations who should be telling us that they need this for medical purposes and if so, a framework can be worked out, to be given to patients who need it, with suitable safeguards," he added."It should not be profit-driven companies which decide, which you buy over the counter, and say that it is for medical purposes.

"I think if it were based on rationality and science, I have no doubt we will succeed. But we are also fighting the power of money in other countries."When asked to assess Singapore's current drug situation, Mr Shanmugam said:"You can never win the fight. But, we more or less have it under control."

According to your own stats, smoking kills 6 Singaporean a day. Scientific and rational thinking should convince you to ban smoking. But why not? Maybe profit and money?

Rubbish mam, it has different categories- medicinal value and those that are purely otherwise. Yea smoking and alcohol won't cause lung cancer or liver damage, right? so not harmful..

Cannabis abuse is the route towards heroin abuse.

In some part of USA , cannabis is a retail , it's legal , its not going to be legalised in Singapore

Oh yes , whatever UN decision , Singapore is right to say NO to cannabis .

Cannabis has different species, there is medical cannabis which you can grow at home, and used mainly for medicinal purposes. Our dear friend lumps everything into the category of narcotics and says it's harmful, read up on the facts, don't listen to him, he's not a doctor!

Ugly side of capitalism! Another western folly

WHO is not medical association eh? Singapore education not all it's cracked up to be I guess

Cannabis is a narcotics…it is harmful but it does have it’s useful therapeutic doses.

Scary ..UN going crazy

So its Climate change and Global warming. Profit driven also.

Shamu.... Once again you are talking rubbish.

so tobacco and alcohol are harmless, thats why they can be sold?
