Stocks ended slightly lower Tuesday, a day after all three major benchmarks logged record finishes.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.22% fell around 68 points, or 0.2%, to finish near 30,336, according to preliminary figures, while the S&P 500 SPX, -0.22% gave up around 8 points, or 0.2%, to end near 3,727. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.38% settled around 49 points lower near 12,850, down 0.4%. .

Investors were tracking the prospect of an expanded aid program after President Donald Trump on Sunday signed a $900 billion package of relief and called on lawmakers to expand payments to households from $600 to $2,000. The Democratic-controlled House passed such a measure on Monday, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., sidestepped a call by Senate Democrats to immediately consider the legislation.
