Donald Trump and his followers are objecting loudly after Twitter, Facebook and other social media outlets banned the outgoing president. But the companies are within their rights, since free speech protections don't often apply to the private sector.

This Friday, Jan. 8, 2021 image shows the suspended Twitter account of President Donald Trump. On Friday, the social media company permanently suspended Trump from its platform, citing "risk of further incitement of violence."

Facebook and Instagram suspended Trump at least until Inauguration Day. Twitch and Snapchat also disabled Trump’s accounts. To top it all off, Twitter ended a nearly 12-year run and shuttered his account, severing an instant line of communication to his 89 million followers.“Free Speech Is Under Attack! Censorship is happening like NEVER before! Don’t let them silence us. Sign up at http://DONJR.COM to stay connected!” his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted Friday.

Krebs oversaw election cybersecurity efforts at the Department of Homeland Security until Trump fired him when he disputed election fraud claims. Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday, he explained that companies enforce their own standards and policies for users. The company said after reviewing Trump’s account in the context of the riot at the Capitol on Wednesday, it was concerned about two tweets he sent Friday that Twitter said could incite violence.

Cue the Nazi snowflake ❄️ posts in 3...2...1... ETTD

They are using the internet which does not belong to them.

If they are so upset, write an editorial!

“Online” now means public. There are rules for behaving in public

It’s still a load of bullshit and you all know it.

Lots of right wing people here annoyed by a private company doing things that arent regulated, and the govt have no control over. OH THE IRONY.

DBChirpy Its sad & embarrassing that Trump and followers do not understand the Constitution or Capitalism. Reuters AFP wsj HouseGOP senategop abc cbs nbc

Plus he was instigating violence nationwide on our political parties

JonLemire He is free to call a press conference if he wants to make a statement

That’s not funny, not even a little funny!!!!

These Republicans had been knocking the heads of democrats for so long a time now with abusive, offensive and downright insulting words and even actions that literally hurts, the latest of which is the attack on the capitol. Now the're crying that the're banned. Whaa !!!

CRUSHtheTRUMPS and ALL who supported them. Accountability is key! No GOP walk backs allowed. 😠

Regardless of what ap, scotus or anyone else chooses to infer, the 1st amendment of the 'US' Constitution prohibits CONGRESS from legislating speech restrictions while the 10th amendment empowers the PEOPLE to do so. Excuse ap; it has no journalists. '

First amendment has some loopholes. It is not an almighty everything covered type.

Well he has a rather large following of conservatives who are being kicked off by the thousands of monopolizing social media platforms who fund and are hired by democratic campaigns so I bet the legality is yet to be seen

Like AP's media fulfilment ...

This👇👇👇👇

It's ok until they come after you. What a joke.

If you do not want another Wednesday In Washington, than all Social Media must Silence these Mentally Challenged People. Yes you can demonstrate, but you do not need to destroy, deface buildings to do it. Why did these people need to carry the weapons that they did. Lok them up

Should have been done years ago

namastenancysf They should have done it 4 years ago when he took office and started his hate speech targeting different individuals. It's been 4 years of terrorizing the American people and beyond. It took this event to shake some sense into them.

Except if you don't want to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple.

That's fine, they are free to become the next Myspace

If they can ban plebs for snowflake indiscretion then YES for inciting violence

We live under Capitalism. In Capitalism, government agents like Presidents don't get to tell private businesses who to do business with. If they don't like Capitalism, they can move to China. There, they arrest, imprison, and execute CEOs of companies that displease the gov.

If this was done to one of your loser dems you would be having a meltdown

Capitalism rules!

Funny. You could probably hear me “objecting loudly” all the way down the block when those very same Trumpers attempted to stage a coup in our nation’s capital.

'Twitter has permanently suspended President Trump from Twitter over a pattern of behavior that violated company rules.'

Really, I don't hear anything.

This is censorship and suppression of free speech

Lookit. There are rules. You don't get four strikes in baseball just because you think you should. Don't like it? Try shuffleboard.

Loophole much?

They are rebellious just like Trump. They would overthrow this good and honorable country if they could. Trump with his words tried and failed. Trump has been a failure pretty well all his life since he was a child. Study it. If this were not a nation of laws, Trump would stay.

It's plain to see that the big tech oligarchs are extensions of the DNC and are therefore government entities.

Then why did a federal appeals court determine that a President's personal Twitter account was an 'official conduit of government information' and that Trump couldn't block users on even his PERSONAL account because he was the President back in 2019?

All these social media companies are private businesses and befor opening an account you must agree to all the rules and policies of the site. Just like a newspaper doesn’t have to print every Letter to the Editor or Opinion Essay submitted, these sites control content.

Does anyone remember when the gay couple wanted to order a cake?

Cartels and monopoly collusion to control markets is illegal. Brain much?

Unless they are a fucking Monopoly. Goverment through the Democratic party did this.

Now the dems are really going to go after these billionaire's money. Not.

Hmmm... I don’t know... -Insane covid infections &death -A corrupt prez attempted a violent coup -democracy hanging by a thread -People with no jobs or food I’m sorry, but Trumps social media account doesn’t make the cut of things to worry about right now.

Did you explain that these social media companies have special protection from lawsuits granted by the government, so this is ending free speech.

Seems like they have every right. (and Trump and his Trumpanistas are all about 'rights'...right?) The government did not require these companies to silence the seditionist and their leader. But on the other hand, I sure wish they would lock them up and throw away the keys.

Trump: Be grateful for my lies.

terms and conditions apply...,

Breaking! Twitter is being classified as Enemy Combatant from Now on. This classification makes Twitter infrastructure and assets a legitimate target for the people of the United States! Trump2024

Government officials telling private companies what to publish sounds more like communism than capitalism to me.

DT could hold press conferences (what a concept!), but that would mean being held to a higher degree of truth-telling. His freedom of speech has not been silenced, just held more accountable.

The question isn’t can they... the question is... if they’ll do it to the President, what makes you think they won’t do it to you if they disagree with you!

But but conservative victimhood....😂

Scary times

It would be nice to get impeachment and removal, but even if not, Trump can be barred from holding office, as can his pathetic son, Hawley, Cruz, etc bc of Sec 3 of the 14th Amendment. Invoke this immediately. Remove those who encouraged this, and bar in the future all who did

Republicans: it’s a capitalist country “Big Tech”: handles their businesses how they see fit Republicans: this is why the government needs to intervene. No monopolies should have this much power or control. Repeal Section 230. Everyone with a working brain: LOLS

if a bakery/flower shop can refuse service to gay people, same principle.

What’s coming will make things better :)

Damn right

Correction: They’re not followers. They’re domestic terrorists that planned a terrorist act via social media. They can loudly object to kissing my ass.

He never assumes responsibility for anything. Actions have consequences. You'd think at 74 he would know this but for his family of grifters that's just too much to ask

Often? They don't apply, period.

It is astounding that so many people who claim to be into freedom, individual rights, small government and/or Against Socialism are so mad that a private company has decided not to bake Trump’s cake

I don’t get it. What does anything in this argument have to do with public sector? Trump wasn’t banned because Twitter attacked his free speech. He was banned because HE attacked it and incited violence. Freedom of speech exists everywhere, not just the public sector (wtf?)

oogiebo45313953 'Objecting loudly'? If a tree falls in a forest . . .

Yes we know posting is not in the Bill of Rights but we are protected from Monopolies with the lAnti Trust Law and want it enforced

They sure didn't mind when a private bakery was able to say no to a gay couple wanting a wedding cake. Fuckin hypocrites.

The companies are within their rights, Trump was within his rights if he changed section 230. He has been too complacent, and now he pays the consequences

This is how the marketplace of ideas works

Hitler and Stalin would be proud.

Twitter should have banned trump earlier.
