Vaughn Palmer: John Horgan hasn't take threat to B.C. cruise ship industry seriously

During debate on her ministry budget last week, she berated the B.C. Liberals for even raising the matter.

“To become law, this bill must still pass in the U.S. House of Representatives and then be signed by President Joe Biden.” To be sure. The B.C. tourism ministry statement then returned to the theme of the temporary nature of the U.S. legislation: “As expected, the legislation is clear that the changes would be automatically rescinded when Canadian ports are reopened to cruise ships. This means that as soon as Canadian ports are ready to welcome cruise ships again, they will be required by U.S. law to stop here on their way to Alaska, even if the current bill becomes law.

Ships built outside the U.S. — which is the case with most cruise ships — have to stop at a foreign port between the two U.S. ports, or pay significant fines. Those stopovers are part of the cruise industry’s $2 billion plus boon to the B.C. economy, including $130 million for the provincial capital.
