Pharmaceutical company Moderna announced on March 7, 2022 that it would develop a site in Kenya to manufacture Covid-19 vaccines. They account for 92% of all vaccinations to date in the US and European Union.

The idea of reproducing these key inputs at other sites seems counter-intuitive. Patents and profits in pharmaceuticals The decisions of the drug manufacturers are reminiscent of the struggle over patents for HIV drugs which took place in South Africa during the early 2000s.
