The $60-million project promises to enhance education, business, art and ideas throughout the region

The University of California San Diego’s wish to extend its physical and social reach downtown is now a reality, with the official opening of UC San Diego Park & Market, a four-story building the university and its partners anticipate will become a cultural hub for the region.

“Park & Market was created to assemble many uniquely talented contributors from all over our region,” said, and to develop “something greater than they could do on their own or that we at UC San Diego could do on our own ... That is what a great university does and that’s who we are.” The building hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday featuring campus and community officials. On Saturday, doors opened to the general public, with an estimated crowd of about 300 sauntering through. Some families brought their children to sign up for the San Diego Public Library’s summer reading program.

On the outside, the building is enclosed in a glass façade, featuring a dual-sided video wall 25 feet tall that projects images onto the street outside and into a first-floor reception area, not far from a twisting, circular staircase that takes visitors to the second floor.
