The tall can — a.k.a. tallboy or pounder — projects both trendiness and blue-collar appeal, experts say.

Beer, including Ontario craft beers, are shown at a grocery store in Ottawa in this August 2018 photo. Tall cans make up 80 per cent of craft beer sales in the province, according to the LCBO.Anyone walking through the beer aisles of their local liquor shop will be familiar with the scene: rows and rows of local craft beer, swathed in distinctive and often colourful logos and art — all in tall, 473-ml cans.

Haydon Dewes, co-founder of Cabin Brewing Company in Calgary, says the cost of a tall can versus a short can is "negligible," at least in terms of the additional aluminum required to produce it. Dewes says the four-pack for tall cans has become a craft beer standard, because of long-held expectations on how much packs of beer costs.

Tall cans are also popular among many non-craft beer brands, the LCBO noted, accounting for 60 per cent of sales in that category. The outlier of that is tall cans, which sell very well in convenience stores. He said they also allow people to have just one beer and feel satisfied.Craft beer people are kind of like bird watchers; they just want it all. They want to be able to tick off as many as they possibly can. According to Dewes, selling in singles also allows beer connoisseurs to sample several varieties in one go.

According to Steinman, it sparked "a tremendous amount of buzz" among "craft geek cognoscenti" consumers.

Blue collar appeal, lol

Thank you experts!

Ahhhhh in Europe 500ml is standard. Anything less is just 1/2 a beer.

Leave it to the gay dorks at the CBC to pedantize everything fun. More beer, more drunk. The end. Someone got paid to write this with the money your government seized from your income via taxes. Always remember that.

Riveting journalism. /s

For the hicks and the hipsters lol

And it’s “supersized”. Contributing to the obesity and diabetes prevalence

I don’t buy small batch pumpkin peach homo ale so this doesn’t really apply to me.

Naw, it's a phallic symbol for guys with small penises and gals with penis envy. woof

What a waste of taxpayer money to produce this “report”. Over thought, have to justify my existence fluff piece. I buy “tall boys” because 1) on sale at the pub 2) i don’t have to wait without a beer for as long while the wait staff makes rounds 3) I can tell the RIDE 1 beer

'A four pack is about the same volume as a six pack' In what world is 4x473mL (1892mL) the same volume as 6x355mL (2130mL). 2130-1892= 238mL. 8x473 is 475mL less volume than 12x355. It best be cheaper in price or theyre ripping people off with this math.

Blue collar 🤷🏻‍♀️

I never trust a beer that has multi bright colored labels on their cans.

Hm. Here I thought it was because they held more beer. I guess that’s why I’m no expert!

You know what fuck it, brewers need to fuck off with 475ml cans and either go straight 500ml or 1L cans.
