An increase of vehicles on Arizona roads in 2021 came with an increase in traffic fatalities for the state, the Arizona Department of Transportation said in a report this week.report found that the number of people killed in traffic collisions jumped 12%, from 1,054 in 2020 to 1,180 in 2021, with the number of crashes overall increasing 22% in the same period.
Crashes increased as 2021 progressed, the report found, matching a progressive increase in people taking to the roads for work, school and other travel. The peak month for crashes in 2021 was October, and the year closed out with more than 121,000 collisions and more than 51,000 people injured. All of this came as drivers in the state covered about 8.1 billion more miles in 2021 than they did in 2020.A top factor in the crashes was speed, which accounted for 30% of traffic deaths in 2021. In total, 359 people died because of speed. Impairment — which includes alcohol, illegal and prescription drugs and marijuana — was an even greater factor and was found in nearly a third of last year’s fatalities, killing 383 people.
ADOT also emphasized the importance of seat belts, saying that 90% of Arizonans do buckle up but that a quarter of all people killed each year aren’t wearing seat belts.
