As remote hiring surges, here's who is benefiting the most.

The Covid-19-driven shift to remote work has significantly weakened the link between geography and work as employers are increasingly likely to hire from outside their home markets.

Notable cities with significant growth in their share of national hires include Memphis, Tennessee, which saw a 52% increase, as well as Tampa, Florida , Colorado Springs, Colorado , Houston and Dallas . In rural areas, which previously accounted for only about a 0.81% of total hires on Gusto’s platform, that inched up to about 1.08%, or a 33% boost, even if the overall number remains low.

"[So], if you're located in New York, you're paying your people New York salaries, even if you're in Alabama. That can be a beautiful thing," Neill said."On the flip side, if you are looking for New York talent in Alabama, and you're paying Alabama prices, it's not going to find you the talent you need."

For example, the median pay for remote workers in technology is $104,129, compared to $76,755 for nonremote workers, according to Gusto.
