U.S. stocks opened lower on Tuesday, raising the possibility of a fifth day in the red as the Nasdaq and S&P 500 traded near their lowest intraday levels in more than two years. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.09% fell 17 points, or 0.5%, to 3,595. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.60% retreated 51 points, or 0.

5%, to 10,490. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.34% fell 49 points, or 0.2%, to 29,153. Investors’ risk appetite remained subdued on Tuesday as they awaited inflation data, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, and the start of third-quarter earnings season, set to begin later in the week.
