The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland has said the cost of installing rooftop solar panels has increased by about a third in the past year, as demand is surging

Meanwhile the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland has said the cost of installing rooftop solar panels has increased by about a third in the past year, as demand is surging.

Fergus Sharkey of the SEAI says investing in a typical modern rooftop solar installation would take in the region of 7-8 years to pay off at today's high electricity prices. Typically, such a system would cost about €6,000 to install before the SEAI grant, and about €4,000 after the grant. "It has curbside appeal," says Mr Sharkey,"It’s something you can show off to your neighbours and your friends. Yet it can be done in a day. There is a little bit of work around your electrical cabinet but nobody is really going into your house. Somebody pops scaffolding up and then, within a day, they’re done, it’s generating electricity and it’s highly visible."

Even if you are not there all day, the SEAI still expects a household will use 60-70% of the solar power generated while at the same time qualifying for a payment between 14-21 cents for every unit of surplus electricity that trickles back, or is"exported", to the national electricity grid.Solar panels have improved in two ways.

However, the level of demand is so great that some people are having to wait six months before an installation can start. Others can’t even get an installer to come and give them a quote.

Price gouging at it's finest. The materials are not that expensive but typical greed among contractors has meant they have increased the cost and are essentially pocketing the grant and more.

Nobody will tell me the service life of the various components & that goes for all types of electric retrofits I need to know this before forking out a fortune, there is a life span but what is it?

The government should set up a non for profit organisation to deal with the green agenda and provide infrastructure at cost plus small margin

People are been screwed companies hiking prices way above inflation rates and getting away with it Fucking scum Government only making excuses and giving free money to wasters Us working People should revolt 🖕🖕😡

Nothing to do with inflation 🤤

Always happens once grants become available. Same thing happened years ago with grants for home insulation.

There's always some sucker willing to fall for a con.

There you go, nothing is sacred in this country, no matter what you try to do you get ripped off, price with grants is not worth it in this country, these should be minimal cost but not in this country

No surprise there take the V A T of the cost of them and the work too

What do these rooftop solar panels do All Greek to me.

Had a quote yesterday. 9k after the seai grant... no thanks.

What about safety on the roof for the installers

Great little country

Yet the panel prices have fallen year on year for the last decade.

It's called inflation and BTW they are not sustainable, these are not green. They need back up energy, the materials needed to make these solar panels is caustic to harvest from the environment, and the disposal of these panels is a huge problem

Good old grants keeping the costs down 👀

'Such a system would cost about €6,000 to install before the SEAI grant, and about €4,000 after the grant'. Don't think you would get solar panels on the roof for €4,000 certainly not with battery backup..Can sell the electricity for 15 cent a unit but pay tax after €100

Hahahaha...
