OTTAWA - The Competition Tribunal has dismissed an application from Canada’s competition watchdog seeking to block Rogers Communications Inc.’s proposed $26-billion purchase of Shaw Communications Inc., clearing a path for the deal to go through. In a summary of its decision released Thursday, the Tribunal says the merger of the two telecommunications companies would not result in materially higher prices.
The decision says the deal that includes the sale of Shaw-owned Freedom Mobile to Quebecor-owned Videotron Ltd. would not likely prevent or lessen competition substantially. The Competition Tribunal held four weeks of hearings to discuss concerns about the proposed deal earlier this year. Throughout the hearing, the Competition Bureau argued the merger would lessen competition in the telecom market, trigger higher prices and lead to poor service. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 29, 2022.
i dunno if you can be credited for clearing a path that was never even blocked. ugh
Veto it now you useless feds
we need a publicly owned communication network in this country
There's no such thing as antitrust law in Canada, nor anything even approaching the US Federal Trade Commission that has independent regulatory authority. In Canada, such deals are always agreed to via political backroom backslapping by industry leaders and politicians. Shameful.
So competition tribunal ensures zero competition? Make that make sense.
High prices low quality
typo: incorrect use of opening and closing quotation marks in this paragraph.
Well that’s horrible news.
Once again the Competition Tribunal has failed Canadians. We need anti-combines legislation that has real teeth instead of the legal farce we have today. If real competition isn’t possible in a sector, then that sector should be publicly owned.
‘Competition bureau’ in Canada?! Lmaoo! There is 2 companies that own tech/media. 2 companies that own grocery/drugstore. Where is the ‘competition’
'They called us a *competition* tribunal!'
No chance for us losers to submit impact statements or interventions I guess.
ScottPiatkowski Unbelievable shit
Fucking CROOKED !
Big pockets to fill requires oligopolies to exist, such a shame.
Fuck
Wow, so what comes next? Changes to Electronic Communications Laws? Canada is going full deep state on us.
Perfect recipe for the next outage that Canada should look forward to.
I hope Shaw users like internet and cellular outages because that’s what will await them.
Yeah we consumers are so stupid… we don’t understand oligopolies actually prevent competition, making prices higher for consumers. Canada already has the highest internet/ mobile rates in the world, and that’s not enough.
What did you expect. This is Canada. The land of low information voters
WTF
lol competition tribunal is confused about the definition of 'competition' then
